Title: The Book Thief
Author: Markus Zusak
Year First Published: 2007
Page Count: 576
Synopsis: It's just a small story really, about among other things: a girl, some words, an accordionist, some fanatical Germans, a Jewish fist-fighter, and quite a lot of thievery. . . .

Set during World War II in Germany, Markus Zusak’s groundbreaking new novel is the story of Liesel Meminger, a foster girl living outside of Munich. Liesel scratches out a meager existence for herself by stealing when she encounters something she can’t resist–books. With the help of her accordion-playing foster father, she learns to read and shares her stolen books with her neighbors during bombing raids as well as with the Jewish man hidden in her basement before he is marched to Dachau.

This is an unforgettable story about the ability of books to feed the soul.

contains only a few instances of profanity in English, lots in German. Several main characters die a sad death in the end. Set in nazi germany, and the story is told from the POV of death. Keep in mind that the movie was pg-13 contains a scene in which a boy is nude and the word penis is mentioned several times

I feel like I know the characters. Plot is very well done, compelling, and exciting Markus Zusak has created, in my opinion, one of the greatest ever books.
I rich, exciting, and sad book that is great for those over twelve.

I don't think the author meant the profanity to be jarring, but it sure took me out of the story every time that I started to get into it.

The story is told in an intriguing way - not straightforward narration
I think I would have enjoyed the book much more, if not for the regular interruptions where the child character spout off profanities. I prevented me from enjoying what should have been a much more involving story.

Profanity Violence Sexual Content
Much of the swearing is done in German, but those words are explained, so the reader knows what most of them are anyway. Characters are whipped, beaten, and blown up.
Characterization Plot Overall Rating
Even minor characters are memorable. I became annoyed with the extreme amount of foreshadowing. Vivid and memorable.
I can't say I exactly enjoyed this book, and that's sort of the point -- it's about a horrific time in world history, when all sorts of bad things happen. It is an eye-opening book, and one that has stuck with me long after I finished reading it.
