There's a fair amount of swordplay and hand-to-hand combat, but the author doesn't wallow in the gory details.

A good use of archetypes, with some original takes on the relationships between Hero, Teacher, and Villain. A standard epic quest story, with the iconic sorts of characters and events one expects. Satisfying. Satisfying.
Nice, clean fantasy. Nothing fantastic, but a satisfying story that kept me coming back for more (I've read all 4 books in the series). Some of the non-human races in this world are quite original, and his dwarf and elf societies are nicely different from others I've read about. This first book has more black-and-white delineation between the Heroes and Villains, which will become more complex later in the series.
